Frequently Asked Questions

What is sustainable landscaping?

A sustainable approach to landscaping involves using native plants as much as possible, optimizing water use, and designing spaces that thrive with minimal chemical inputs, creating a healthy environment for plants, people, and wildlife. It also emphasizes design choices and gardening techniques that require less intensive maintenance, especially long-term.

How does landscape coaching work?

Landscape coaching involves an initial on-site consult to discuss challenges presented by your yard and design ideas for the future.

The consult is followed by further communication (and visits) to assist you in developing a sustainable yard or garden. You may choose to have me design your space for you, or I can coach you through your own design process (site assessment, correct selection and placement of plants, and plant procurement).*

The design process is followed by guidance in site preparation and  installation. In-person support is available and encouraged for each of these stages. Post-installation check-ins continue until your garden is established (more information about long-term support below).

Once your garden has matured, you may choose to recieve regular emails offering advice and seasonal task lists, as well as periodic check-ins to provide an opportunity to ask questions or troubleshoot new problems.

The goal is to empower you to become a successful and sustainable gardener!

*If you already have a garden in place and just need help restoring or maintaining it, you can skip right to the post-installation check-ins and/or long-term support!

Will you really continue to help me long-term?

Absolutely!

Sustainable gardens take time to mature. As the saying goes, perennial plants tend to "sleep, creep, then leap." They spend their first year establishing a robust root system. The second year, they continue to build a solid foundation with growth above and below-ground. By the third year, they are well established in the environment and "leap" to their full potential. Continued coaching through the first few years is essential to help you feel confident that you are giving your young plants their best shot at success.

And of course, even the most sustainable garden requires some long-term maintenance. Gardens are not static; they are living ecosystems and ecosystems are messy! Living things change and grow. Ongoing advice, seasonal task lists, and the occasional check-in will set you on the right path to maintain a beautiful yard, long-term.
